IN THE MAIL

This nice letter from Jack Rienzo whose father - known as "Coach" or  Funzi" - was the coach of Waterville's winning "Champs" just fifty years ago!

"I (like lots of former Watervillians) have been following the men’s basketball team through your blog and I’ve been thinking back to 1965 when my father’s team was vying for an undefeated season. I was hoping that, on the 50th anniversary of that team and their achievement, WCS would do it again. My mother and I used to go to all his home and sectional games – and even though I was pretty young, I remember the stress he was under, but more than that, I remember the pride he had in his team. I also remember that the bond between coach and team lasted for decades. I’m sure this team realizes they’ve done something special – after all, achieving something hasn’t been done in 50 years is pretty amazing. I wish my father was still around to see this team. I’m sure he would have been at every game. I hope the team hears from some of the players from that ’65 team – they were quite the class act, overall."

Thank you, Jack!

I found this photo of the 1965 team in the digitized files of The Waterville Times.

Also in the Mail

 - a note from Carol Gilley letting us know that the March Newsletter of the Marshall Historical Society can now be found on the Society's Web Page.

The letter includes a fine tribute to the late Art Sanders and a full page of his "reminiscences" of Deansboro.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Blog readers may have gotten the impression that "Basketball" is the only "game" in town, but there are at least two other major activities that occupy minds and fill conversations:

#1.  The Weather - especially the SNOW!

Snowmobilers have been enjoying it, traveling all across the countryside on miles and miles of groomed trails.
Jeff Reynolds took this photograph of sleds parked at Hotel Solsville around lunchtime on Saturday.

In the Village, however, it's a different story, with snowbanks growing higher and higher and streets becoming narrower and narrower.

Ginny Keith took this picture of "Dueling Bobcats" digging, whirling and dumping, as the Waterville DPW worked to broaden West Bacon Street on Friday.

The results? Much better visibility and real two-lane traffic!

Thank you, DPW!

They must have trucked thousands of tons of roadside snow to the "old dump" on Route 315.
It's a fairly large area, but "the walls are closing in" and there won't be room for too much more!

But this is a good sign!

Several old maples near the Quaker Meeting House on Austin Road have been "tapped!"

********

The Second major topic of conversation is....

The reason that you haven't seen photos of rehearsals or behind-the-scenes crews at work on sets either here on the blog or on Facebook is because the Director, Jessica Lotyczewski, wants everyone who comes to see the production to be totally surprised!

But a week from now ........  there will be pictures, for sure!

Be sure to read this week's edition of The Waterville Times. Editor Patty Louise has been "embedded" in the production crew for many weeks and although she will not be giving away any secrets, she will describe what's been happening and just how many hands and skills it takes to put together a major musical production!

More when it happens.

Enjoy the Thaw!
