BASKETBALL TONIGHT

WCS vs. ONONDAGA at 7:15
Allyn Gymnasium at OCC.

Good Luck, Gentlemen!!

I won't be at the game, but I'll certainly be listening to it on
and will post the final score as soon as the game's over!

******

Brian Staring only posted two photographs on Facebook of the Frankfort-Schuyler game:

The first is of Jacob English's perfect dunk ...

.............. and this shows an intentional move by one of the FS players that took Zach Sawyer right down to the floor - hard!

Zach wasn't hurt, but the other fellow may never recover!

- to Central New Yorkers from WKTV Newschannel 2, Utica.

"You survived the coldest month EVER in Utica weather history.

We didn't just squeak by this record, we crushed it.
The average temperature for the month came in at

7.2°

TWO degrees less than the old record of 9.2°, set back 158 years ago in 1857!

Here are some other noteable cold months:
January 1857: 9.2°
February 1934: 9.3°
January 1970: 9.9°
January 1994: 10.8°
January 2004: 11.4°

**********************************

At 4:00 p.m. on Sunday the temperature is 23.9 degrees and there are just a few snowflakes in the air.

The WKTV Weather Forecast:

"*Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for all of Central NY from Sunday morning until Monday morning*
Today starts off cloudy with a few scattered snow showers, snow becomes more widespread during the afternoon and evening. This will not be a big storm but the snow will cause some roads to become slick and snow covered Sunday night. Snow dissipates during the overnight Sunday into Monday morning. A general 2"-5" of snowfall accumulation is expected by Monday mid morning, the higher amounts on higher elevations to the north of Utica.
Temperatures do not look as cold next week, with highs in the 20s and 30s.  The next storm system likely brings a wintry mix of precipitation late Tuesday into Wednesday."

Saturday afternoon it was bright and sunny and snowmobilers were out, everywhere.  I have to thank them: every time I see snowmobiles crossing a highway the drivers are obviously using a great deal of caution  -  probably more than passing motorists are!

Between the sun and temperatures that were higher than they have been in weeks, some melting actually took place and there were wonderfully muddy puddles on Babbott Avenue!

Roads are generally bare out in the country and Highway Departments have been keeping snowbanks along roadsides, and especially at junctions, pushed back or cut 'way down.

The tallest snowbank that I saw was at the intersection of Brennan and Summit Roads, just east of Lincoln-Davies.

Pushed-back snowbanks .......

................. south of the Village on State Route 12.

Here in the Village you'd hardly guess that there had been much snow at all!  Except for small amounts left around immovable obstacles like trees and lamp posts, the Village DPW had carted it all away!

"March Comes in Like a Lion
and Goes Out Like a Lamb."

Is there any truth to this saying???

From the Farmers Almanac:  "Weather sayings are as colorful as our imagination. While many sayings are based on careful observations and turn out to be accurate, others are merely rhymes or beliefs of the people who came before us.
Those people often believed that bad spirits could affect the weather adversely, so they were cautious as to what they did or did not do in certain situations. Those beliefs often included ideas that there should be a balance in weather and life. So, if a month came in bad (like a lion), it should go out good and calm (like a lamb).

The Origin of the saying:
(From EarthSky.org.)

"The origin of the March Lion & Lamb can be traced back to ancient times and those who watched the stars.

"You see March begins as the Constellation Leo is crossing toward the meridian. Leo is the Lion. As Leo marches away, the Constellation Aries begins to rise toward the end of the month. Aries is the ram: What many lambs will become someday!
So, based on the stars, March "comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb."
