Wednesday Afternoon

It's 42 degrees, wet and windy at 12:30 Wednesday afternoon.

It's just NOT a nice day to ride around taking pictures, so I'll publish this blog post early and hope for better weather very soon.

The Weather Forecast from TWCNY:

"Clouds, Wind & Rain , Colder Late Week.
Today will be cloudy, warm, and windy with periods of rain and occasional showers. Despite all of that, temperatures should manage to climb into the upper 50s and low 60s.
It looks like a steadier rain will stay possible into the night and then give way to lighter, scattered showers Thursday. We'll continue to battle the clouds on Thursday with highs in the low 60s. Fortunately, lingering showers are expected to gradually taper Friday which will set us up for drier conditions just in time for Halloween!
After experiencing a big cool down late in the week with temperatures struggling to make it out of the 40s, highs will get back up into the 50s this weekend."

My daughter Allison, when she was two or three years old, photographed by Gary Settle of the Topeka Capital-Journal for an article featuring her father, the late "Dick" Brown, who (according to his mother) was a descendant of the Towne family of Salem, Massachusetts, two of whose members were hung during the infamous 1692-93 Witchcraft Trials.

ADD-ONS

Re: the new Croquet Court at the Library —

I asked Jeff Reynolds what the dimensions are of this beautiful new lawn: "The sodded area will accommodate a full-size regulation 35x28 yd. court, but can be split into two half-regulation, fully-playable courts, (each approximately the size of a tennis court).
A bocce court is 95 ft, so we can do that here, too, x 4 or 5."

About the architectural style of these buildings on East Main Street  —

Because each of these buildings was constructed with commercial enterprise in mind and all are decorated with ornamental brackets, typical of the Italianate Style, they would be classified as "Commercial Italianate."
Many residential buildings in the Village have the same detailing and are referred to as, simply, "Italianate."

About "Trick or Treat" night —

The hours for "Trick or Treat" time in he Village on Saturday
are from  5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

** For many years there has been an "unwritten rule" asking that Trick or Treaters visit ONLY the residences where porch lights are ON.
Your consideration is appreciated." **

The Weather Forecast from TWCNY:

"Quiet Start to Work Week, Cool and Bright.High pressure is here with lots of sun for the next couple of days and highs in the 40s and 50s today and into the 50s Tuesday.
Highs will likely jump into the low 60s Wednesday thanks to a gusty southerly wind, but it will be quite wet with some rain expected from the remnants of Patricia.
It will turn much colder by the end of the week with a little rain and snow possibly in the air for Friday.  The early outlook for Halloween currently is not too spooky for the ghosts and goblins with some sun and highs near 50."

For the past several months the ground floor of this building on East Main Street — the future home of "260 Structural Engineering," owned by Dale Meszler — has been covered by a protective "mask" making everyone wonder what the building was actually going to look like. Over the weekend, they learned!

The details of the two new windows match those of the buildings on each side.

If you're walking by and peek in the window you'll see that the original brick walls of what will be the conference room and reception area have been left exposed.

What will come next?  The door, perhaps?

New Blog Feature: "The Kiosk"

The actual kiosk, designed about ten years ago, has never been completely constructed because — at nearly 20 feet across — no one has been able to decide where to put it.  I believe that its pieces and parts are stored somewhere in the Village Barn, just waiting.

A Reminder  .......

 ******************************************

RECENTLY .......

Last Wednesday, October 14,  the Waterville Fire Department hosted quite a few youngsters (and their moms) for an annual Fire Prevention Month program.

The "Bookworms Early Literacy Group"  are 3-4 year olds that meet regularly at the Waterville Public Library on Mondays & Wednesdays from September-May.

"Miss Jill" (Jillian Getman Kervin) sent me this photo montage and wrote: "The Fire Department has been kind enough to include us as part of Fire Prevention for many years.  The kids are always thrilled to see the gear and the trucks, and we're thrilled when they are brave enough to high-5 a fireman and understand some basic fire safety."

*****

Also taking pictures was Mr. Joe Jurczak, father of Waterville Fire Fighter Matt Jurczak, event organizer.

Oriskany Falls Firefighter Gary Williams posed with the "Book Worms" after the presentation.

Williams had begun the program dressed in everyday street clothes, putting on one piece of fire-fighting clothing at a time, showing the children that although a fully-outfitted firefighter might be as scary-looking as Darth Vader, the children should never be afraid of them.  They also learned that in an actual fire, a helmetted fire fighter will enter a room asking, "Is anyone here?" and the correct reply (echoed by all the youngsters) was "Over here! Over Here!"
Each child was given a little Fireman's hat, a coloring calendar and crayons, a bag to carry them in, and - to take home and talk with their parents about - a generic house plan so that the family will have a predetermined "safe plan" to exit their home and prearranged "safe place" to meet.

*****

The next day, October 15, several Fire Departments (and Mr. Jurczak) were at the Memorial Park School.

Visiting fire engines included equipment from  West Winfield, N. Brookfield, Deansboro, and Oriskany Falls. The one getting the most attention was Clinton's ladder truck.

The "bucket," which can be extended to 105 feet, was riden by Waterville firefighters Allison Kelley and Jerrod Waufle.

Students and adults were shown how to exit a smoke-filled school bus ......

 ....and smoke-filled classrooms.

They didn't get to ride in the Clinton ladder truck's bucket, but they DID get to put on some real gear ....  (assisted by Jake English) .....

............... and try some target practice with the hoses!

Lunch for everyone!

Here & There

Three or fours days ago, this was the view from the top of the Sally Road hill.

Yes! There will be Wild Grape Jam, this year!

Leaves on the beech trees turned the woods next to Fuess-Cleary Road gold ......

......... but corn was dry and drab, and being harvested ......

... and milkweed pods sprang open, releasing clouds of feather-borne seeds.

New on the scene.
General Election will take place on Tuesday, November 3rd.
(The same day as the Pie Sale in Waterville!)

Other changes, too, and some things are still growing.
The oblong plot of bare earth next to the Library now appears to have been perfectly leveled. Keep watching!

Bigger and better — at Growmark in Sangerfield .......

...... next to Route 315.........

.... and road salt in the new Salt Storage Barn in Sangerfield.
