At 6:00 a.m. it's  -7 degrees with snow and even rain in the extended forecast.

***************************

Local DPW's are Ready!

The Village DPW spent all Thursday pushing, scooping,  and trucking HUNDREDS of TONS of snow to the "old dump" on
Route 315,  clearing parking areas and sidewalks in the Village.

A similar activity took place
during the night / early morning hours
with snowbanks being pushed back along State Route 12
south of the Village.

Marshall Township Crews have been pushing back snowbanks next to roads in all those stretches where the wind always blows and drifts always form - like those in "the flats" along
Route 315 in "Dicksville."

THANK YOU!

Here's the TWCNY Prediction:

"Cold & Brisk Today, Temps Improve This Weekend.

Other than a couple of snow showers/flurries southeast of Lake Ontario today, it will be cold and brisk across Central NY with sun and clouds. Highs will be in the 10s once again. We'll keep in the risk for a snow shower tonight and it will be very cold as temperatures bottom out in the -0s and +0s.

High pressure is expected to dominate tomorrow with mainly dry conditions, highs near 20 and lots of sun. That being said, a snow shower cannot be completely ruled out for areas east of Lake Ontario. Quiet weather will carry us into Sunday morning and then clouds look to thicken up with a few snow showers developing later on. Highs will be in the upper 20s. Scattered snow showers Sunday night should gradually taper on Monday with temperatures Monday afternoon climbing closer to 30 degrees.

After seeing a temporary break in the action Monday night/Tuesday, the forecast calls for the arrival of a new system Tuesday night which may end up being more of a mixed precipitation event."

March 25 at Noon.

The Care and Management of Lies, by Jacqueline Winspear
the reading choice of the Waterville Book Discussion Group
March.  Pack your lunch, and bring it to the Meeting Room at the Waterville Library at noon, on Wednesday, March 25th. Coffee,Tea and dessert with lively discussion will be offered.  Call the library at 841 4651 to order a copy of the book.

"Winspear writes with such authority and empathy that readers can’t help but feel that such homey scenes must have taken place in the trenches. By the time the story darkens into tragedy, we accept that those moments must have happened, too. The Care and Management of Lies is a quietly powerful story that more than holds its own in a publishing season crowded with novels and nonfiction commemorating the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I."

It's Garbage Day

9.1 degrees at 5:00 a.m.

The TWCNY Weather Forecast:

"The Cold has Returned, Light Snow in the Near Term.

We have those bitter wind chills with us to kick off our Thursday! Lows are anywhere from 5 below zero to 5 above and a light wind makes it feel more like 10 to 15 below zero. So have those heavy jackets front and center and ready to go! We have clouds increasing today and a few lighter snow showers or scattered flurries possible. No eventful snow in the forecast for the rest of the work week.

Friday morning will be another bitter start as we have temperatures still near or slightly below zero, but some promise of better temps as we work into the weekend. Again some snow showers will be around through this time frame."

Special Note on the WKTV "Weather Blog" posted by Meteorologist Bill Kardas:

"Congratulations!  You are living through the coldest month on record here in Central New York.  It isn't official yet, but it looks like a lock based on the forecast.  The average should end up close to 8° for the month.  This month will likely set the record for coldest average weather in any month in Central New York.  That makes this month colder than the historic winters of the 1970s and also colder than the month we set the coldest temperature ever in Utica (-34 on February 9th, 1934)!"

Monday afternoon update/add-ons

It's 7.5 degrees and overcast at 4:30 p.m.

The TWCNY Weather Forecast:

"FRIGID Overnight, Not as Cold Tuesday Afternoon.

The overnight will feature some clearing which will allow temperatures to bottom out in the -0s and -10s. Wind chill values at times during the overnight/Tuesday morning are expected to range anywhere from -15 to -25 with a few spots feeling as cold as 30 to 35 below! Despite the frigid start to our Tuesday, we'll see afternoon highs getting into the middle/upper 10s to near 20 degrees with some sun.

A clipper system will work in Tuesday night with a few scattered snow showers and lingering moisture looks to keep the overall weather pattern slightly unsettled through Wednesday. Temperatures on Wednesday should manage to sneak into the low 20s and then highs drop back into the 10s Thursday and Friday, setting us up for a cold but quieter finish to the week."

Moving outdoors .......

Late Saturday afternoon the wind and accompanying "chill factor" were fierce, even my camera semed to shiver,  and there were just a few cars on West Main Street. Folks were either shopping at Morgan's or Main Street Liquors or were gathering at The Slaughtered Lamb for drinks, conversation and servings of hearty, old-fashioned Yankee Pot Roast!

Today patches of bare pavement appeared, here and there .....

.....  next to plowed-up or snowblown mountains of snow.

Although the Memorial Bandstand is snowbound, the DPW keeps the sidewalks through the Park cleared ......

..............  and at the Library, thanks to Mr. Reynolds, walkers are even able to meander through the Lally Memorial Gardens!

IN THE MAIL

from Gil Condon re: Alice Altmeier's recollection of sliding down "Livingston Hill" ...

"We used to live up at 414 Putnam St., right where the picture was taken. The railroad tracks were about as far as we could go on sleds and the tracks were usually bare."

(Oh darn, Gil! Alice's story was so much more adventurous and memorable, but yours is probably more accurate!
Either way, it's always good to hear from you!)

A special letter to all of you from Dan Williams about the
2015 Daniel Barden Highland Mudfest:

"The new year has come and with that folks around town and the surrounding areas are assessing how last year went and what kind of goals they want to set for this year.
The 3rd Daniel Barden Highland Mudfest will be held on April 25th and we are so excited to announce some big and powerful changes for this year's event.

The proceeds raised this year will be used to fund 16 adventure scholarships for 8th graders both locally and in Connecticut. The adventure will be run by the Clark Foundation Adventure program. This leadership program has been in existence for 20 plus years and is incredible at shaping young people's lives.
The kids selected will go on a 78- mile canoe trip from Blue Mountain Lake to Tupper Lake. They will be challenged  physically (i.e. learning to canoe, carrying gear, portages) and also mentally (outdoor, portable cooking, setting up camp, and making friends with total strangers).

I feel that we as a society are losing our connection to nature and subsequently we are seeing the effects of that in some of the social ills displayed in our society. I also know firsthand the rejuvenating power of time spent in the outdoors from the numerous trips up Tassel Hill and all over the Waterville area. No matter how stressed out I am before I hike I always feel better after a jaunt in the woods.

The students chosen will fill out an application and answer a few questions about themselves. The second part of the application asks students to is to research and choose a charity that they feel will have the biggest impact on the needs of their community. Barden Mudfest will fund these charities equally in their names. I hope that through this second piece teens will start thinking about others and experiencing the joy of helping others.

Again, the 3rd Daniel Barden Mudfest will be held April 25th at MKJ Farms in Deansboro. The event features a 1/2 mile kids' run, 5K untimed adventure run, and 5 mile obstacle race. We will also have 4 live bands and delicious food and beverages.

If you don't feel up for the run please consider signing up to volunteer as we can always use the help. To learn more about the event please visit us on the web at  www.bardenmudfest.org or call Dan Williams 725-7934. Thanks and I Iook forward to getting my mud on soon with you all!

Dan Williams"

A Special Visitor

arrived at my kitchen door on Saturday afternoon:

Author Russell Eastman
announcing the publication of his book,
"From Good Luck Farm."

"From Good Luck Farm" details the life of one of the earliest families in the United States, "The Eastmans". From the first family member, Roger Eastman, who arrived in the United States on the ship Confidence in April of 1638 this narrative passionately tells the story of growing up in the early 20th Century on Good Luck Farm. Good Luck Farm was given to Howard Socrates Eastman in 1877 and this historic narrative tells the great story of growing up on a farm in Upstate New York in the first half of the 20th Century. This story of life on a dairy farm in Upstate New York is filled with personal insight regarding historic events and a very personal view of life during this period. By sharing personal memories of siblings and other relatives the author is able to connect with the reader on not just a historic level, rather on an intimate private level. The author shares little known facts regarding George Eastman founder of Eastman Kodak, whose family shares roots with the author. From Good Luck Farm will keep the reader engaged and wanting more details of life in upstate New York in the early 20th Century."

"From Good Luck Farm"  $10  is available at:
Morgan's Hardware Store in Waterville
and at The Deansboro Superette.

You can also order "From Good Luck Farm" online from Amazon.com in either paperback or Kindle edition.

Mid-week Update

It's minus-8 degrees in the Hollow at 5:00 a.m.

This "cold snap" has lasted so long that ice has completely hidden the little waterfall next to Gridley-Paige Road and the Caves in Forge Hollow.

A snow drift nearly covers the stone wall at the top of Grant Hill.

Looking down "Livingston Hill" (now Putnam Street) I'm reminded of a story that the late Alice Altmeier told me years ago:

She said that the snow on village roads was packed down using horse-drawn rollers and that one of the childrens' favorite treats was to pull a long, heavy sled called a "double rip" to the top of Livingston Hill, line up four, five or six youngsters on the long plank suspended over two sets of runners (the front set was steerable) and ride down the hill right onto Main Street and - on a good day - make the turn onto Buell Avenue and down that curvy hill as far as the old foundry!

Oh, what a grand ride that would have been!

*******************************

It's too cold for sliding this morning!

The TWCNY Weather Forecast:

"Chilly but Not As Cold, Snow Showers and Periods of Snow Today.

We wake up to cold again with most areas starting below zero. We make our way to the 20s today with increasing clouds and snow showers. We will have steadier bursts of snow later this afternoon and evening which will give us a few quick inches and make for slower travel later. Otherwise snow showers continue tonight with cold temperatures again overnight.

Thursday brings the cold back with snow showers and highs only in the single digits. We will have dangerous and cold wind chills back for the end of the work week with lake snow showers.

Looking ahead to the weekend we should be better with temperatures in the mid and upper 20s and a new system on Sunday that will bring more snow."
