is the choice of the Waterville Book Discussion Group for May.
"Vivid and mesmerizing, The Aviator's Wife takes us behind the scenes and into the heart of the woman who loved and married Charles Lindbergh. That was her destiny—a life that took her soaring into the skies and then plunged her to earth, a story of both triumph and pain that will take your breath away."

ALSO IN THE MAIL ....
- a Letter from Tom Eisenhut to me and
to be shared with all of you!
"I would like the opportunity to respond to your letter that appeared on the Blog and in the Times. I would request that you print this.
Not too many years ago there was a factory running around the clock on the very piece of land that Dave Sullivan proposes to build the apartments. This was during a period when our area and village thrived. Things have changed! While most homes on Putnam Street are well maintained, There appears to be at least two abandoned homes on that street right now. There lies what remain of a junkyard right across the street.
You state that the village may want the property for another use in 10-20 years. Our county, town, village and school could use the tax revenue now. This project is estimated to bring our municipalities between $30,000-35000 per year, every year between taxes, water and sewer and garbage fees.
Businesses have dwindled in our village the past few years. What do you think the remaining businesses would say if you asked them if they could use ten more families? Our local government and community leaders have been working very hard to attract a bank and a grocery store. What do you think any bank or grocery chain is thinking right now- if they are following this?
Leave this property industrial? Does this mean a meat packing plant or some other less desirable industry could still come onto that property?
A park with grass, trees and benches? Seriously? We already have beautiful areas spaced throughout our village that people can enjoy. The village park, the area behind the Drs. offices on Main Street, Babbott Field, the elementary school. You can walk five minutes in any direction from the center of the village and have green space!
Let’s be realistic, no other developers are coming in to the village right away. Just think, what would the Rope Factory look like now if Dave didn’t purchase it? Does anyone remember what the Brunswick Apartments looked like ten years ago? Dave has a proven track record.
I would ask our Mayor and Village Trustees to please help our village prosper and not allow a vocal minority to make your decision.
Thank you, Tom Eisenhut

The writer of the following letter has asked to remain Anonymous, but I'm publishing it - with permission - because it offers a different view:
"I just wanted to say that I am not for or against this, especially, I am not a home owner. I do rent an apartment.
My only comment to your letter is that the fact that you stated: 'Is there really that much need for ten additional apartments?'
I have heard a lot of people saying how hard it is to find an apartment/house in Waterville. The only problem they face is that there are two bedroom apartments, but very few with more bedrooms. If the people are married and with more than one child, especially of both sexes, they need more than two bedrooms. I know when I was looking for an apartment in Waterville and my need was 3 or more bedrooms, I had a difficult time filling that need. Another problem was also the amount of rent for the apartment/house. There are very few that the rental is a reasonable amount for this economic area and in good enough shape, liveable or problem of heating."
