"Waterville Book Discussion Group"

- from Doris Stephan.

"Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way," wrote Tolstoy in Anna Karenina. In Jhumpa Lahiri's first novel, The Namesake, and her short story collections Unaccustomed Earth and Interpreter of Maladies, she is adept at depicting the particular unhappinesses at the core of the families she crafts. So too in her intricate novel The Lowland, shortlisted for the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction and Man Booker prize: tracing how brotherly bonds become broken by violent politics, it is suffused with sadness.

Mark your calendar...and come to the Meeting Room at the Waterville Public Library at 12 noon on Wednesday, Feb. 25th.  Pack your lunch, coffee, tea, dessert and discussion will be provided. Call the Library at 841 4651 to reserve a copy of the book.

Speaking of Books ........
did you know that.......

the Memorial Park Elementary School Library will be adding 75 new books to its collection early next week?

Students anxiously anticipate the new books and the opportunity to become part of the “First Reads Club” at MPS.

Not only do members of the “First Reads Club” sign up to be the first student to check out and read specific new titles, but the student chosen randomly is honored via a nameplate inside the front cover of the new book featuring its first reader.

(My thanks to Katie Parker!)

Everyone seems to be complaining to me either about the cold or the results of the caucusses or the fact that whenever there's an event at SouthGate Ministries no one can park on East Main Street or in the CVS parking lot, so - except for tidbits of GOOD news, now and then - I'm going to be taking the week off ....
it's time to

"refresh."

Thursday Morning Update

It's Garbage Day.

Bright, clearing sky and at 7:30 a.m. the temperature in Whiskey Hollow is 1.6 degrees.

The TWCNY Weather Forecast:

"Blustery Conditions, Snow Develops Late Today/Tonight.

Even with a quiet start and improving temps, we have snow showers developing late today into tonight. Most of the day will be breezy and not as cold with highs in the upper 20s and low 30s.

Friday will be windy and much colder with scattered snow showers continuing. Temperatures will fall through the teens on and drop below zero later Friday night. Saturday looks cold, but quiet with some sunshine. Highs on Saturday will remain in the teens.

At this point, the forecast calls for dry conditions during the first half of the weekend; however, we'll have to keep a close eye on what could be a new storm developing Sunday/Sunday night.

" We got 30" of snow in Franklin.  Roads only have one lane passable and high snow banks making it hard to pull out into the roads.  I had a snow day/work from home yesterday.  Today I went in, not too bad 'til I got to Boston.   I'm glad that Boston cancelled school again tomorrow (Thursday) as I can't imagine trying to drive with the school buses on the road."

Monday morning Update

It's 6 degrees at 6:30 a.m.

Here's the TWCNY Weather Forecast:

Nor'easter Develops Today, Cold and Snow Showers Continue

Today will be mostly cloudy and cold (highs in the upper 10s and low 20s) with scattered snow showers developing. We'll be watching a Nor'easter develop and strengthen on today; however, snow accumulations look light for us by the end of the day with a few inches at most.

It will remain cold for Tuesday with a few snow showers around and the stronger part of the storm still well to the east.

A drier air mass is expected to build back in Wednesday and then we start to focus in on a new system set to arrive Thursday. Luckily, the second half of the week won't be as cold with temperatures climbing out of the 10s and into the 20s/near 30 degrees.

Early on Sunday drifts like this, at the top of Grant Hill, ......

closed Route 12 from Waterville to New Hartford for a few hours, but the highway was opened, again, at noon.

********************************

Except where drifts have formed there really is not that much snow. We're making up for it, however, in COLD!

The ice must be fairly thick, by now, and there were a few people fishing through the ice on Bailey Lake.

Early on Saturday Dan and Melissa Williams and Jack Falin, warmed  by the exercise and bright sun, skiied to the summit of Tassell Hill - the highest point in Oneida County.

******

I don't imagine that cold weather bothers crows, especially when they've found a feast such as this - the "sunflower field" in Stockwell.

Only in Winter, when the leaves have left the thousands of Black Walnut Trees in the plantation next to Tower Street, can we get an unobstructed view of the large barn that was built by Rueben Tower in 1885, replacing an earlier structure that burned.

And only when the trees along Park Place are bare and the sun is low does it shine brightly on the bronze plaques of the Memorial Bandstand monument.

***************************

The blogger is having a problem with the right hand-to-arm connector
--- that would be the wrist contraption ---
and is going to be going very easy on all "mouse" manipulation for a few days.
Just plain typing doesn't seem to be a bother, but it's that darned mouse that causes complaints.

Don't worry: I'll post really important stuff when it comes along, but I'm not going to be looking for any extra Photoshop or
graphic design work this week.

But have a good week,
Stay Warm,
and don't forget that there can be ice hiding beneath the snow.
